2012 Symposium

2ND NZBERS SYMPOSIUM

Consolidating collaborative built environment research and education in New Zealand

Thursday 15 November 2012

Sir Neil Waters Auditorium SNW300, Albany Campus, Massey University, Gate 1, Albany Expressway, Albany

The 2nd New Zealand Built Environment Symposium (NZBERS) held on Thursday 15th November 2012 on the Albany Campus of Massey University, Auckland. The symposia presented a platform for leveraging collegiality and coordinated efforts to achieving optimal built environment research outputs and effects. The theme of this second symposium was on consolidating collaborative built environment research and education in New Zealand. University of Auckland, AUT, Massey University, Unitec, Victoria University, University of Otago and the University of Canterbury participated in the symposium.

The one-day symposium included a keynote address from Pieter Burghout – the CEO of the Building Research Association of New Zealand (BRANZ) and the Chairman, New Zealand Construction Industry Council. Adrian Bennett, Manager Building Science & Research, Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) provided updates on the recent changes with the MBIE. The built environment programme leaders in the New Zealand universities presented summaries of the current and recently completed built environment research carried out by research students and academic staff in their units. Also an industry panel discussion was led by Richard Capie (General Manager, Research Strategy, BRANZ), Adrian Bennett and Ruth Berry (BRANZ Research Consultant). The discussion topic was on “A single industry research strategy: What it is and why it matters”.

The event was sponsored by BRANZ and convened by Dr Jasper Mbachu (Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of construction programmes) and Associate Professor Robyn Phipps (Director Built Environment), School of Engineering and Advanced Technology, College of Sciences, Massey University at Albany.

Overall, the symposium offered opportunities for postgraduate research students and academics to network with the construction industry practitioners and policy makers with a view to understanding the priority research needs of the industry. This and other symposia to follow aim to challenge the silo mentality amongst researchers in the New Zeaalnd built environment. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of the built environment (BE) research, there is a need to focus on promoting collegiality and awareness of the BE research within the New Zealand tertiary institutions.
